At Earlyworld nursery we have created sensory 2a sensory environment for all of our children. This is a special place where babies, toddlers and pre-school children alike can enter a little world filled with soothing sounds, moving colours and shapes, bubble tubes, lava lamps, fairy lights, images created by disco balls, and walls covered in natural materials where you can touch, feel and explore all of our senses in one room.
It’s also a place that offers comfort for those children who are new to our setting, where they can enjoy calm and quiet with a member of staff or a small group, away from the main nursery to give them chance to settle in gradually.
The benefits of sensory play are well known. Our sensory room provides an oasis of relaxation, which is vital for children’s emotional health, a place where they can rest and become interested in their environment. Some will simply lie down on our soft cushions and beanbags and enjoy listening to soothing music for relaxation such as Dolphin Dance or Natural Jazz. While for others they will engage in the more interactive areas and get in touch with natural resources such as pinecones, shells, treasure baskets, and natural materials.sensory 1
These experiences also provide a multitude of benefits for children with special needs, encouraging hand and eye co-ordination, and the development of social and language skills. An overactive child or distressed child can be comforted and calmed in the sensory room, an inactive child can become engaged. Sensory rooms are particularly useful for any children with sight or hearing problems or for children with varying degrees of attention deficiency disorders or other special educational needs.
It’s also a haven of tranquillity where a key worker can bond with a child, providing a peaceful experience away from the energy of the main nursery.
